Learning Experience #3

Chinese Tap Water

One of the biggest “WOW” moments in my life took place across the ocean. I was in Hubei China and I wanted a glass of water. Just like back in Burlington, I took out my water bottle and went to the nearest tap. I filled up my bottle and was about to take a sip when my friend Andrew, who was from China said not to drink the water. Andrew then continued to tell me that drinking Chinese tap water can make you ill with all kinds of different diseases. Here I was in a city with over a hundred million people and you couldn’t drink the water that comes out of your own sink. This really shocked me, mainly because I’ve never experience anything like it before.

I knew right away that my experience in China was going to change me forever. I have lived my entire like on the Cape Ann Massachusetts, where live is easy and laid back and where you could most certainty drink your own tap water. Being raised in an environment like that, I can say now that I was wasteful of it and took it for granted. While in China I had to buy bottled water to brush my teeth and I was like holy cow thank God we have clean water easy available in the good old USA. The lasting affects of that class trip have been positive. When it comes to water I have become way more conscience over the amount I use.
